Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/4 lb. butter
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 3/4 cups shortening
- 1/2 cup sweet milk
- 8 apples, peeled and sliced
Directions
- Bring sugar, water spices and baking powder.
- Blend flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in shortening until texture of coarse corn meal. Mix in sweet milk.
- Split dough in half. Roll out first section approximately the size of a 9×13 inch pa. Cut into 2-inch wide strips.
- Put half of sliced apples in bottom of pan, layer dough strips on top. Place remainder of apple slices on top of the layered strips.
- Roll out remainder of dough approximate size of pan, cut air vents to allow steam to escape.
- Pour boiling mixture over crust. Bake at 375 degrees until crust is brown and apples are tender.
