Ingredients
- Nonstick cooking spray
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. apple pie spice
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1 egg white, lightly beaten
- 3 Tbsp. unsalted butter, melted
- 2 1/2 tsp. canola oil
- 4 cups peeled and chopped apples
- 1 Tbsp. unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 cups very thinly sliced apples
- 1 to 2 Tbsp. water
- 2 tsp. maple syrup
- 3/4 cup frozen light whipped dessert topping, thawed (optional)

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Coat a 9-inch square baking pan with cooking spray.

In a large bowl stir together the next six ingredients (through salt). Stir in the next four ingredients (through oil). Stir in chopped apples. Press dough into prepared pan.

Bake 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack.

Meanwhile, in a 10-inch nonstick skillet melt the 1 Tbsp. butter over medium heat. Add sliced apples, cook 8 to 10 minutes or until stirring until it evaporates. Remove from heat; stir in maple syrup.

Cut cake into squares. Top with apple mixture and, if desired, whipped topping.
