Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup softened butter
- 1 1/4 cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup snipped candied red cherries(about 10)
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 square melted unsweetened chocolate
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
Directions

Sift flour, baking powder, and salt. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Blend in flour mixture.

vide into thirds. Add cherries and almond extract to 1/3, chocolate and nuts to 1/3, and poppy seeds to 1/3. Line loaf pan with waxed paper. Pack in layers and cover with waxed paper; refrigerate 24 hours.

Unwrap dough. Cut in half lengthwise and then crosswise into 1/4" slices.

Bake at 400 degrees on ungreased cookie sheet for 8-10 minutes, until very lightly browned. They will spread a bit while baking.

Cool on rack.
