Baclava

Need a baba or dariole mould (round cup tins approx. 5cm deep)

Ingredients

  • 375 g fillo pastry
  • 1-1/2 cups ground almonds
  • 1/2 cup walnut pieces
  • 250 g butter, unsalted, melted
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup self-raising flour
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • Syrup:
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1-1/2 cups water
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves

Directions

  1. In a bowl combine almonds, walnuts, flour, cinnamon and cloves.

  2. Add lightly beaten eggs and milk to bind dry ingredients.

  3. Remove fillo pastry from packet and divide each into 8 rectangular strips.

  4. Grease lightly the mould.

  5. Place the pastry strips in the tin molds like a flower (in a flower way).

  6. In each centre put 1-1/2 Tbsp of the nut mixture.

  7. Bake 320 F for 50 minutes until golden brown.

  8. Allow to cool.

  9. Syrup:

  10. Bring to boil sugar, water and cloves.

  11. Add lemon and simmer for 10 minutes.

  12. Pour hot syrup on top of each flower Baclava and allow to cool.

  13. Remove from tin when cool.
