Ingredients
- 1 pkg. dry yeast
- 3 T. sugar
- 1/2 C. lukewarm water
- 1/4 c. butter
- 3/4 c. milk
- 1 1/2 t. salt
- 1 egg, beaten
- 4 c. unbleached all-purpose four
Directions

Dissolve yeast and 1 T. sugar in water. Let mixture sit 10 minutes. Bubbles indicate active yeast.

Heat milk and butter in a small saucepan until butter melted. Set aside

Measure remaining 2 T. sugar and salt in large bowl.

Pour in milk mixture.

Blend well with wooden spoon.

Add beaten egg and 1/2 c. of flour. Mixture should be about 105F.

Add yeast mixture & stir well.

Add about half the flour. Beat vigorously for 3 minutes or 300 strokes with wooden spoon or dough hook on mixer.

Add rest of flour for soft dough.

Lift dough from bowl and knead on floured board until blisters appear on dough’s surface and dough is elastic.

Shape into ball and return to bowl.

Butter surface. Cover with wax paper.

Let rise in a warm place until double in size – about 1 hour.

Punch down and knead lightly.

Divide into two and shape to fit 2 well greased and flour loaf pans.

Butter surface and let rise 1 hour.

Bake in preheated 400F for 30-35 minutes.
