Garlic Bread

Ingredients

  • 5-1/2 to 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 8 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 12 inch deep Dutch oven

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, the

  2. yeast, and salt. Add warm water and mix well. Stir in

  3. as much of the remaining flour as your can. Turn out

  4. onto lightly floured surface and knead in enough

  5. remaining flour to make a stiff dough that is smooth

  6. and elastic (8 to 10 minutes). Shape into a ball and

  7. place in greased bowl or Dutch oven. Cover and let

  8. rise until doubled (about 1 hour).

  9. Punch dough down and add garlic (use more or less

  10. depending on your tastes and the likelihood of vampire

  11. attacks.) Knead garlic into dough and form into a

  12. ball. Cover and let rise until nearly doubled (35 to

  13. 45 minutes) Make 3 to 4 slits, ΒΌ inch deep, in the top

  14. of the dough. Bake in Dutch oven at approx. 375

  15. degrees for 40 minutes or until it sounds hollow when

  16. you tap on top of the loaf. Brush top of loaf with

  17. melted butter and serve warm.
