Ingredients
- 1/2 pound butter, softened
- 5 eggs
- 2 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 cup yogurt
- 3 cups flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, dissolved in milk
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 2 1/2 cups water
- juice of 1 lemon
Directions

eheat oven to 350.

Cream butter with sugar

Add eggs, one at a time and stir well

Add yogurt, flour, baking powder and milk and mix well

Bake 45-50 minutes in a greased and floured 9×13 pan

After cake has coo;led completely, douse with hot syrup

Top with crushed walnuts and maraschino cherries

For syrup, boil sugar, water and lemon juice

Boil and stir for about 10 minutes to make a light syrup

You can also make the syrup ahead of time, then douse the cake with the cold syrup as soon as it comes out of the oven.
