Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound butter, softened
  • 5 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, dissolved in milk
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • juice of 1 lemon

Directions

  1. eheat oven to 350.

  2. Cream butter with sugar

  3. Add eggs, one at a time and stir well

  4. Add yogurt, flour, baking powder and milk and mix well

  5. Bake 45-50 minutes in a greased and floured 9×13 pan

  6. After cake has coo;led completely, douse with hot syrup

  7. Top with crushed walnuts and maraschino cherries

  8. For syrup, boil sugar, water and lemon juice

  9. Boil and stir for about 10 minutes to make a light syrup

  10. You can also make the syrup ahead of time, then douse the cake with the cold syrup as soon as it comes out of the oven.
