Ingredients
- 2-1/4 - 2-1/2 pounds cooking apples
- 1 cup plus 2 Tablespoons flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 8 Tablespoons (1 stick) Butter
- 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3/4 cup chopped walnuts and/or pecans (Optional)
- 1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- Whipped Cream or Ice Cream (to top - optional)
Directions
-
1, Butter a shallow 1-1/2 or 2 quart baking dish or casserole. Preheat oven to 350 F for a glass dish, 375F for a metal or ceramic dish.
-
Peel the apples and cut them in quarters. Cut out the cores, making sure to remove all seeds and hard matter. Cut each quarter in 3 long slices and put the slices in a large bowl.
-
Add 1/4 cup of the sugar, the cloves, cinnamon and lemon juice to the apples and mix well. Spread the apples in the baking dish.
-
Stir together the flour, salt and remaining 3/4 cup of the sugar. Cut the butter into the flour until the mixture has a crumbly texture. Stir in the nuts. Spread the mixture evenly on top of the apples.
-
Bake for 50 – 60 minutes, until the apples are tender and the crust is crisp and lightly browned. Serve warm. Top with whipped cream or ice cream, if you like.
