Cook time: 10 minutes
Serves 25 people
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon hot water
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
-
Cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. I usually add chocolate chips and nuts at this point.
-
Dissolve baking soda in hot water. Add to batter along with salt. Stir in flour, do not overmix. Drop by large spoonfuls onto ungreased pans.
-
Bake for about 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are nicely browned.

Personal notes: Could be a little too sweet, so I’d reduce the sugar a little. I also prefer using double-acting baking powder because it’s more foolproof in the case of overmixing. Reduce flour up to 1/4 cup to increase chewiness. Vanilla extract could also be reduced if you don’t like overpowering vanilla scent.
