Tortillas (Wheat and Corn)

Carmina and Eloisa were two young teenage girls from Mexico who stayed with our family for two weeks. We had such a wonderful with them. They loved chocolate chip cookies and we baked them regularly. In turn, they called their mother long distance for the homemade tortilla recipe.

Ingredients

  • Flour Tortillas
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup oil
  • 1 cup hot water
  • Corn Tortillas
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup corn meal
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water

Directions

  1. Mix together the flour with the salt.

  2. Add remaining ingredients, mix together. Knead.

  3. Make 2” balls.

  4. Flour surface, then flour ball. Roll flat into circles.

  5. Cook on hot griddle. Turn when light brown.

  6. Put small amount of butter on tortilla while still warm.
