Ingredients

  • 1 3 oz can of chow mein noodles or 2 cups pretzel sticks, broken into 1/2 in pieces
  • 1 cup dry roasted peanuts
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk

Directions

  1. Line cookie sheet with wax paper.

  2. In a large bowl, combine the noodles and peanuts, set aside.

  3. In a heavy medium saucepan, set over low heat, melt the chocolate chips with the condensed milk, stirring until melted and smooth. Remove from heat.

  4. Stir warm chocolate mixture in peanut mixture. Quickly drop by tablespoonfuls onto wax paper. Chill 2 hrs or until firm. Store in covered container between sheets of wax paper.

  5. VARIATIONS

  6. Milk chocolate cashew haystacks: Prepare as directed above but use milk chocolate chips in place of the semisweet chocolate chips and coarsely chopped roasted cashews in place of the peanuts.

  7. White chocolate almond haystacks: Prepare as directed about but use white chocolate chips in place of the semisweet chocolate chips. Add 1/2 tsp of almond extract to the melted chocolate mixture and use coarsely chopped roasted almonds in place of the peanuts.

  8. Holiday haystacks: Prepare as directed above but use white chocolate chips in place of the semisweet chocolate chips and a combination of 1/2 cup dried cranberries plus 1/2 cup coarsely chopped roasted almonds in place of peanuts.

  9. Butterscoth haystacks: Prepare as directed above but use butterscotch baking chips in place of semisweet chocolate chips.
