Brownies and Glossy Chocolate Frosting

Ingredients

  • Brownies:
  • 4 oz. unsweetened chocolate
  • 2/3 c. shortening
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. chopped walnuts
  • Frosting:
  • 3 tblsp. shortening
  • 3 oz. unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 c. powdered sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Directions

  1. Brownies: Heat oven to 350 degrees; grease pan.

  2. Melt chocolate and shortening over low heat; remove from heat.

  3. When cool, add chocolate mixture to sugar, eggs, and vanilla (in large bowl). Stir in all remaining ingredients.

  4. Spread in pan. Bake for 30 mins. or until brownies start to pull away from sides of pan; do not overbake. Cool slightly.

  5. Frosting: Melt shortening and chocolate in a saucepan over low heat. Stir in remaining ingredients; beat until smooth.

  6. Place pan of frosting in a bowl of water and ice; continue beating until of spreading consistency.

  7. Spread over cooled brownies; top with nuts.
