almond-glazed sugar cookies

Ingredients

  • Cookies:
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Glaze:
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • Water as needed
  • Sliced almonds

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 400 degrees.

  2. In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine all ingredients for the cookies and beat at medium speed until creamy.

  3. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

  4. Flatten each ball with bottom of a buttered glass dipped in sugar. (To prevent sticking to the cookie, dip glass in sugar each time.)

  5. Bake 7-9 minutes, until browned slightly on bottom.

  6. In a bowl, combine powdered sugar and almond extract, and as much water as needed (add by scant teaspoons at a time) until mixture is a thick liquid. Spread glaze on top of cookies and decorate with sliced almonds.
