Hard Tack Candy

Just like in the old days

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 tsp. oil flavoring
  • Several drops food coloring

Directions

  1. Butter large platter or cookie sheet and set aside.
  2. Mix first 3 ingredients in a saucepan until sugar is dissolve. Cook without stirring until candy thermometer reaches 300 degrees (hard crack stage). Immediately remove from heat. Add coloring and 1 dram (tsp) of oil flavoring. Stir until well mixed. Pour syrup onto pan or platter. Cut as it cools or let harden and shatter.

  4. lemon-yellow

  5. anise-black

  6. orange- orange

  7. peppermint- white

  8. wintergreen-green

  9. cherry- red

  10. cinnamon- pink (or 2 drops red with 1 drop blue)

  11. clove- blue

  12. butter rum- dark yellow
