Millie’s Bar-B-Q Sauce

(from Coker Family’s recipe box)

This is best if made ahead a couple of hours and allow to sit out on stove to allow the flavors to mingle. I save my ketchup bottle to store left-over sauce. It will keep for months in the refrigerator.
Goes great on chicken, pork & beef!

Ingredients

  • 36 ounce jar Heinz ketchup
  • 1/2 ketchup jar filled with water
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 1 large onion finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (approx.)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring (approx.)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (approx.)
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard (approx.)
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • dash or two Tabasco sauce

Directions

  1. Saute onions and garlic in margarine until golden…just almost start browning the bottom of your pan.

  2. Dump in all of the ketchup. Fill ketchup bottle half way with water and rinse the rest of the ketchup out and pour all of this into pan. (Tip: save your bottle to store left over sauce in later.)

  3. Add Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, lemon juice, Tabasco and mustard.

  4. Bring to a slow boil, stirring to keep from burning on bottom.

  5. Stir in brown sugar to taste.

  6. Simmer just until sugar is dissolved.

  7. Allow flavors to meld together and sit on stove top until ready to serve.
