Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter, unsalted
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and chopped (about 2 cups)
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp. shortening
Directions
- To prepare fruit filling, melt butter and sugar together; add chopped apples and simmer covered over medium to low heat for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Remove from heat and add brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon and stir; taste and adjust sweetness. Set apple mixture aside.
- Next, prepare your pie crust dough; roll out 6 or 8-inch rounds about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Add 1 to 2 Tbsp. of the cooled filling in the center, slightly wet edges of dough with water, fold over and press edges of dough with a folk to seal.
- Place pies on a greased baking sheet, or two pies in an 8-inch cake pan. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes or until edges are golden brown.
- Oven baked fried pies can be frozen for later use.

Variations: used dried fruits such as apricots or peaches. To prepare filling, combine two 7 oz. pkg. of dried fruit, 2 cups water, 1 cup of sugar and bring to a boil. Then remove from heat and follow directions as above.
