Ingredients
- 1 lemon, scrubbed
- 1 orange, scrubbed
- 5 whole cloves
- 2 or 3 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2/3 cup water
- 1 (3-inch) cinnamon stick
- 1 (750 ml.) bottle dry red wine
- 1/4 cup brandy
Directions
- Remove zest in wide strips from lemon and orange using a paring knife or vegetable peeler. Place the zests in a large saucepan, then juice the fruits into the pan.
- Combine the cloves and cardamom pods in a small piece of cheesecloth and tie corners together to create a bundle. Add bundle to saucepan, along with the sugar, water and cinnamon stick and stir to combine.
-
Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until mixture is syrupy thick, about 20 minutes.
- Stir in the wine and brandy and cook just until heated through; do not let mixture boil. Remove and discard cinnamon stick and spice bundle before serving.
