Pain Perdue (Lost Bread or French Toast)

Ingredients

  • 1 can (5 oz.) evaporated milk
  • 2 eggs, well beaten
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 6 slices French bread
  • 1 cup oil or butter
  • powdered sugar

Directions

  1. Mix together evaporated milk, eggs sugar, and vanilla; dip each slice of bread into this mixture, coating well. Drain off excess batter and fry in hot oil at 375 degrees until brown; turn and brown other side.
  2. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
