Bread-and-Butter Pickles

Ingredients

  • 1 lb cucumbers, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup thinly sliced sweet onions
  • 3 tbsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp celery seeds
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric

Directions

  1. Combine cucumbers, onions and salt in a bowl; cover with ice and let sit for 1 hour. Rinse and drain cucumbers and onions.

  2. Boil vinegar, sugar, brown sugar, mustard seeds, celery seeds, pepper flakes, and turmeric in a saucepan over medium heat until sugar dissolves.

  3. Pour vinegar mixture over cucumbers and onions in a large bowl or jar, submerging them; chill at least 4 hours.
