Ingredients
- 5 slices day-old bread
- 1/2 cup almond paste
- 1 1/2 cups grated Monterey Jack or Muenster cheese
- 3 cups milk
- 3 eggs
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. grated orange rind
- 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Directions
- Cut bread into 1-inch cubes, to yield about 3 cups. rumble almond paste and mix with grated cheese. Layer bread cubes alternately with almond paste mixture in 11 × 7-inch baking pan.
- Heat milk to scalding. Beat eggs lightly with sugar, salt and orange rind; gradually stir in hot milk.
- For a crumbly topping, mix well butter, brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Pour milk mixture over layered ingredients in pan; top with crumbly mixture. Set into a larger pan, add 1-inch hot water to larger pan and bake at 350 degrees 35 to 45 minutes or until custard is set.
