Apple Raisin Balls

Ingredients

  • 1 envelope active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (165 to 115 degrees), divided
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar
  • 3 small apples, peeled , cored, and diced
  • 1/2 cup raisins or currants
  • Oil for deep-frying
  • Confectioners' Sugar

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm milk; set aside.

  2. In large bowl mix well flour and salt. With wooden spoon beat in eggs one at a time. Beat in yeast mixture and remaining 3/4 cup milk just until smooth. Stir in granulated sugar, apples and raisins (dough will be sticky). Cover and let rise in warm, draft-free place 1 hour or until doubled.

  3. Meanwhile fill deep-fryer or heavy pot with 4 inches oil; heat to 375 degrees. Dip 2 Tbsp. in hot oil; pick up spoonful of dough and, with spoons, shape into a ball. Drop ball in oil; repeat with remaining dough. Fry a few at a time, turning once, 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with slotted spoon; drain on paper towels. Dust all over with confectioners’ sugar.
