Apple-Ladyfinger Meringue

Ingredients
- Sugar
- 2 pieces lemon rind (3 x 1 inch)
- 4 medium apples, cored and peeled
- 1 pkg. (3 oz.) ladyfingers
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 3 egg whites
- Sliced almonds or chopped nuts
- Cream of chilled custard sauce
Directions

Combine in large skillet 1/2 cup sugar, the lemon rind and 1 1/2 cups water. Bring to boil and simmer 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, cut apples in eighths, add to syrup and simmer, covered, until tender.

Arrange ladyfingers in circular pattern on bottom of buttered 9 inch pie pan. Arrange apple wedges on top.

Co0mbine lemon juice with 1/3 cup apple syrup and pour over apples.

Beat egg whites until stiff, add 6 Tbsp. sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Spread on apples, then sprinkle with almonds.

Bake in preheated 350 degree oven 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden. Serve with cream.
