Applesauce Beef Stew

Ingredients

  • 3 lb. boneless beef, cut in 1-inch cubes
  • Seasoned flour
  • 3 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 cup sliced celery
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 8-oz. can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. chili powder
  • 5 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups applesauce
  • 6 medium potatoes, pared and cut in half
  • 6 medium onions, peeled
  • 6 medium carrots, halved lengthwise

Directions

  1. Dredge beef in seasoned flour; brown on all sides

  2. in shortening. Add remaining ingredients, except potatoes, onions and carrots. Bring to boiling point; simmer, covered, about 2 hours or until meat is tender.

  3. Add vegetables; simmer for 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender. May be thickened with 1 Tbsp. flour mixed in cool water.
