Ingredients

• 1/2 cup shortening
• 1 cup sugar
• 1egg
• 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
• 1 3/4 cups sifted flour
• 1 tsp. baking soda
• 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
• 1 tsp. allspice
• 1 tsp. nutmeg
• 1/4 tsp. cloves
• 1/2 tsp. salt

Directions

1. Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy; add egg; beat well. Add applesauce. Sift remaining ingredients and add to the applesauce mixture.

2. Bake in greased and floured 8 × 5 × 3 or 11 × 4 1/2 × 2 1/2 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Frost with butter frosting. Decorate with whole walnuts.
