Ingredients

  • 3/4 lb. ground chuck
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 cups canned applesauce
  • 1 1/2 cup herb-seasoned stuffing mix
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • Dash of pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. sage
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup sliced onions
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • Pastry for 2-crust pie
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 soup can milk or water

Directions

  1. Combine the ground chuck, egg and 1 cup applesauce. Add the stuffing mix, 1/2 tsp. salt, pepper and sage and mix thoroughly. Form into 10 balls.

  2. Brown on all sides in shortening in a skillet and remove from skillet.

  3. Melt butter in skillet, add onions and saute until light brown. Add remaining applesauce and salt.

  4. Roll out pastry on a floured surface and cut into 10 squares. Place an equal amount of applesauce mixture and 1 meatball on each square. Moisten edges of pastry squares with water and draw up corners over meatball. Press edges of pastry together to seal and place on baking sheet.

  5. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or until brown. Mix the soup and water in a saucepan and heat through, but so not boil. Serve with baked hamburger pastries.
