Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. flavoring of your choice
  • Few drops of coloring (red and blue)

Directions

  1. Cream butter. Add sugar and beaten egg. Beat until well-blended. Add flour, baking powder, and flavoring; mix until dough is smooth and easy to handle.

  2. Divide dough into 3 different bowls and color each portion as desired. Mix thoroughly to get a uniform color. Add more color, a drop at a time, as needed.

  3. Form each portion into long bars or flattened cylinders. Wrap each in waxed paper or plastic wrap and refrigerate until well chilled.

  4. Remove wrappings and stack cylinders on top of each other in the desired color arrangement. Wrap entire log in waxed paper or plastic wrap and chill until very firm.

  5. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Slice flag bars 1/4-inch thick. Place on cookie sheet and bake 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on wire rack.

  6. For glaze, add enough water to 1 cup of confectioners’ sugar to make a thin icing.
