Apple Dumplings with Praline Sauce

Ingredients
- Pastry:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1 cup vegetable shortening
- 6 to 8 Tbsp. ice water
- Filling:
- 6 small cooking apples, peeled, cored
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 3/4 tsp. apple-pie spice OR cinnamon
- milk or cream
- additional sugar
- Sauce:
- 1 1/2 cups water or apple cider
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp. butter
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup chopped pecans
- Softly whipped cream, optional
Directions

To make the pastry: Combine the flour and salt in a medium mixing bowl. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle with ice water, 1 Tbsp. at a time, and mix with a fork until flour mixture is moistened. Form dough into a ball. Place dough on a lightly floured surface. Flatten and roll into an 18 × 12-inch rectangle. Cut into 6 (6-inch) squares.

To make the filling: Place a peeled, cored apple upright in the center of each square. Combine sugar and spice; fill center of each apple.

Moisten edges of each pastry square. fold corners to center over each apple; Seal edges by pinching together. Place in an ungreased 13 × 9 inch baking dish. Brush dumplings with milk or cream and sprinkle with sugar, if desired. Set aside.

To make the sauce: In a saucepan, combine the water or cider and brown sugar. Cook over medium heat until sugar dissolves, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat; stir in butter, vanilla and pecans. Pour around dumplings.

Bake at 400 degrees for 35 minutes, or until golden. Spoon sauce over dumplings and sere with softly whipped cream, if desired.
