Baked Apple Dumplings

Ingredients
- Sauce:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 Tbsp. flour
- 3 cups water
- 1 Tbsp. butter
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- Dumplings:
- 1 cup flour
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 1/4 Tbsp. shortening
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 3 to 4 apples, peeled and sliced
- Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Butter
Directions

To make the sauce:

In a medium-size saucepan, mix together the sugar and flour, gradually add water and stir until smooth; add butter and stir.

Cook over medium heat until creamy; stir in vanilla. Pour into a medium-size baking dish and set aside.

To make the dumplings:

Combine flour, salt, shortening, baking powder and milk; stir to a soft dough. Roll out to a 1/4-inch thickness and cut in rounds about 4 inches in diameter.

Place 10 apple slices on each round. Sprinkle each round with 2 Tbsp. sugar, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and a dot of butter. Fold dough over and pinch edges together; drop into sauce. Bake it in moderate (350 degree) oven about 40 minutes.
