Baked Doughnuts

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 pkg. yeast
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 3 3/4 cups flour

Directions

  1. In saucepan add sugar, nutmeg, salt and shortening to milk. Stir until shortening is melted over low heat.

  2. Cool to lukewarm; add well-beaten eggs and yeast dissolved in 3/4 cup lukewarm water. Add flour and heat briskly. Let rise until double in bulk, about 1 hour.

  3. Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with floured doughnut cutter; place on greased pan and brush with melted butter.

  4. Let rise about 1/2 hour, or until about double. Bake at 450 degrees for about 10 minutes. Brush with butter when done, then dust with confectioners’ sugar. If desired, frost with a brown sugar frosting instead of dusting.
