Upside-Down Pizza Casserole

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb. Italian sausage or lean ground beef
  • 1 1/2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms (4 oz.)
  • 1 15 oz. can tomato sauce with basil, garlic and oregano
  • 1/4 cup pitted sliced ripe olives (optional)
  • 1 to 1 1.2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese or Italian cheese blend (4 to 6 oz.)
  • 1 13.8 oz. pkg. refrigerated pizza crust
  • Milk
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Thinly slice pepperoni, chopped sweet pepper and/ or tomatoes, sliced olives and/or fresh mushrooms, and/or fresh basil (optional)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large skillet cook sausage and mushrooms over medium-high heat until meatr is browned. Drain off fat. Stir in tomato sauce and, if desired, olives, heat through. Spread in a 2-quart rectangular baking dish. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.

  2. Arrange pizza crust on hot beef mixture. Fold under excess crust and press along edges of dish to seal. Cut several 1-inch slits in crust. Brush with milk and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

  3. Bake 15 to 18 minutes or until crust is lightly browned. If desired, add toppings and sprinkle with additional Parmesan cheese.
