Baked- in Shortcake

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp. melted butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 cups red-ripe firm strawberries, sliced
  • Crumble Topper:
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Directions

  1. Sift together dry ingredients; add milk, egg, and butter; beat 2 minutes. Turn into greased 8 × 8 × 2-inch baking pan. Top with sliced berries; sprinkle with Crumble Topper.

  2. Bake in moderate oven (375 degrees) about 35 minutes or until done. Cut in 9 squares. Serve warm with ice cream.

  3. Crumble Topper: Combine flour and sugar; cut in the butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add 1/4 cup chopped walnuts.
