Ingredients
- 1 tsp vegetable oil
- 1 lb. sage breakfast sausage
- 3 tbsp. all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1 tbsp. chopped fresh sage
- 1 1/4 tsp black pepper, divided
- 3/4 tsp kosher salt
- 16.3 oz. can homestyle buttermilk biscuits, quartered
- 1 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted
- Garnish: chopped fresh sage
Directions
-
Preheat oven to 400. Spray a 3-quart baking dish with cooking spray.
-
In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add sausage; cook until browned and crumbly, about 6 minutes. Add flour; cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually whisk in milk, sage, 1 tsp pepper, and salt until smooth. Cook, whisking frequently, until mixture thickens, about 3 minutes. Spoon gravy into prepared pan.
-
Place biscuit quarters in an even layer on top of hot gravy. Brush with melted butter, and sprinkle with remaining 1/4 tsp pepper.
-
Bake until biscuits are golden brown and gravy is bubbly, 15-20 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with sage.
