Ingredients

  • 1 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1 lb. sage breakfast sausage
  • 3 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tbsp. chopped fresh sage
  • 1 1/4 tsp black pepper, divided
  • 3/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 16.3 oz. can homestyle buttermilk biscuits, quartered
  • 1 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted
  • Garnish: chopped fresh sage

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400. Spray a 3-quart baking dish with cooking spray.

  2. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add sausage; cook until browned and crumbly, about 6 minutes. Add flour; cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually whisk in milk, sage, 1 tsp pepper, and salt until smooth. Cook, whisking frequently, until mixture thickens, about 3 minutes. Spoon gravy into prepared pan.

  3. Place biscuit quarters in an even layer on top of hot gravy. Brush with melted butter, and sprinkle with remaining 1/4 tsp pepper.

  4. Bake until biscuits are golden brown and gravy is bubbly, 15-20 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with sage.
