Ingredients
- 3 c. all purpose flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tbsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 c. Crisco shortening
- About 3/4 c. buttermilk
Directions
- In bowl, combine flour, salt, baking powder and soda. Stir well to combine.
- Add the Crisco and mix using a pastry blender or hands until mixture resembles cornmeal. Add enough buttermilk (about 3/4 c.) to make a soft dough.
- Turn out onto a well-floured surface. Knead gently only a brief time until dough holds together and is not sticky.
- Roll out to a thickness of about 1/2 inch, then cut into circles with a cookie or a biscuit cutter.
- Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Prick the tops gently with a fork and brush with beaten egg white.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 450 for about 8 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
