Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 T maple syrup instead
- 6-8 French bread slices, 1 inch thick. Stale is best - leave crusts on.
- 4 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups half-and-half cream
- 1 T vanilla extract
- 1 T orange juice or 1 t brandy-based orange liqueur (such as Grand MarnierĀ®)
- 1 t grated orange peel
- dash or two of cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions
-
Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Mix in brown sugar and maple syrup, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Pour into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
-
Arrange bread in the baking dish in a single layer. In a small bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half, vanilla extract, orange juice, orange peel, cinnamon, and salt. Pour over the bread. Cover, and chill at least 8 hours, or overnight.
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Remove the dish from the refrigerator, and bring to room temperature.
-
Bake uncovered 20 minutes in the preheated oven, flip bread over to cook other side, bake another 20 minutes until puffed and lightly browned.
-
Serve with sliced strawberries.
