Onion Thokku

Ingredients

  • Onion - 250 grams or 1/4 kg
  • Chillie powder - 20 -25 grams
  • Salt - 40 grams
  • Tamarind - 40 grams
  • Oil - 1/4 cup
  • Fenugreek powder - 1/2 tsp
  • For the seasoning
  • Mustard - 1/4 tsp
  • Asafoetida/Hing -1/4 tsp

Directions

  1. Peel and grind onions to a paste.

  2. Soak tamarind in warm water ( around 1 1/2 cups) and extract it juice .Discard the pulp.

  3. Dry roast fenugreek seeds and powder it.

  4. Method

  5. Heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add asafoetida.

  6. Then add grounded onion paste and turmeric powder. Fry for a few minutes.

  7. Add tamarind extract, salt, chillie powder and cook till it becomes thick and oil starts separating.

  8. Add fenugreek powder and remove from flame.

  9. Store it in a clean bottle.
