Very old recipe…Many recipes of a similar cookie call to make these with cream cheese and butter…not sour cream and not yeast. I believe those are possibly more Polish. This recipe originally called to pull all four centers into the middle making a pouch, this was called a “scarf”; I choose to pull just two corners in…this is to represent the Christ Child wrapped in swaddling.

My grandmother brought this recipe over with her from Czechoslovakia in the late 1800’s.

This is traditionally made at Christmas. Serve sliced with butter or toast it with butter…make French toast or bread pudding with leftovers!
For clear directions on making the braid, go to YouTube and look for Christmas Bread – Vanocka by Czech Cookbook. There will be an instructional video for making the braid. I mix mine different and add more raisins and additional dried fruit.
