Some add-ins you could consider: Roasted slivered almonds, chopped cashews or diced water chestnuts would be good with an Asian entrée. When serving with chicken, you could add diced pimentos. Sliced mushrooms sautéed with the onions would be good with a beef dish. You could also use diced red pepper and/or celery and sauté with the onions.
